SUMMARY:Create Your Own Pollinator Patch
DESCRIPTION:One in every three bites of food you eat is made possible by pollinators. But our beloved bees\, butterflies\, and birds need our help to keep doing their job. Join Green Spaces Alliance to learn how you can show your love for pollinators at home with a workshop and garden volunteer day! \nThis will be a morning of learning and hands-on skill building at Labor Serena Community Garden\, a neighborhood space transforming into a butterfly garden. Participants will learn about what our native pollinators need to thrive before getting hands-on to create a pollinator haven on San Antonio’s west side. You will rejuvenate the garden’s soil\, plant beautiful perennials and herbs in the garden beds\, and even make butterfly puddling dishes! Everyone will get to take home their own unique puddlers. \nThis is a family-friendly workshop perfect for anyone who wants to support pollinators through gardening.

SUMMARY:Beginner Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Home to over 300 bird species each year\, this 1\,200-acre sanctuary showcases four diverse habitats—wetlands\, woodlands\, brushlands\, and grasslands—all supported by water-wise practices and native plants that thrive in South Texas conditions. \nJoin Mitchell Lake Audubon Center every fourth Saturday for a Bird Tour designed with beginning birders in mind. Traveling on foot\, guides will walk you through bird identification and proper use of binoculars. This family-friendly program is best suited for ages 5+\, and more experienced birders are always welcome too. \nAlong the way\, learn how native plants play a critical role in supporting birds and pollinators—providing food\, shelter\, and conserving precious water resources. You’ll also explore native plant gardens and discover how to create your own bird-friendly\, water-wise habitat at home. After the tour\, continue exploring and even contribute to community science by helping researchers better understand the wildlife living in our city.

SUMMARY:4th Saturday Talks- Ethnobotany
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Josie Gonzales is a Certified Interpretive Guide and Texas Master Naturalist. She’ll discuss Ethnobotany in the context of actual plants in the Phil Hardberger Park. Ethnobotany is how people of a particular culture and region make use of native plants. Plants sustain people not only as food and as medicine\, but provide materials\, dyes\, tannins\, wax\, latex\, soap\, resin and oil. \nThere will be a very brief overview of ethnobotanical concepts prior to the walk. On the walk itself a wide variety of forbs\, shrubs\, and trees will be discussed from the standpoint of medicinal\, utilitarian\, and nutritional uses. Participants will have a chance to look at and ask questions about these plants. \nPlease arrive about 7:50 am to register. \nMinors must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. This presentation is only appropriate for dogs who are leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy–it is definitely suitable for families\, with flat terrain\, and a slow pace. This will only be about a mile walk\, and the event will last about two hours\, ending back at the Phil Hardberger Park Urban Ecology Center around 10:00 am.

SUMMARY:Basics of Landscaping: Groundcovers for Rainbow Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Ground covers can be an important element in your home landscape. They can serve as a “living mulch”\, retaining moisture\, suppressing weeds\, and moderating soil temperatures. They provide an alternative to turfgrass\, particularly when it is in shade. And they can provide habitat for your butterflies\, bees\, and other pollinators! Join Candy Roach\, Bexar County Master Gardener\, as she discussed plant selection\, bed preparation\, installation\, and maintenance of ground covers.
