SUMMARY:Gardening Essentials
DESCRIPTION:Gardening during drought without busting the water bill is the theme for March 16 Gardening Essentials. \nSan Antonio has been in meteorological drought for 7 years. The total rainfall during that time has totaled 6 years of our average rainfall and we’ve lived through the 2 hottest years recorded in local history. \nHow can we and our gardens survive and thrive? We will revisit some gardening basics through the lens of extreme water conservation with intent of surviving drought with two of our most familar friends of GVST and encore presenters\, Robin Maymar and David Vaughan. \nRobin Maymar\, mathematician and long-time president of San Antonio Herb Society\, will give us a no-fail strategy to get an herb garden well-rooted while conserving water with five basic herbs. \nDavid Vaughan was among the group of Texans who first became certified as arborists by International Society of Arborists and then founded the Texas chapter of ISA. Vaughan was recognized by the chapter as “Arborist of the Year” in 2022. David Vaughan is committed to sharing information about soil health as it affects trees. He will discuss strategies for tree care during drought \nSee Gardening Essentials details at https://www.gardeningvolunteers.org/gardeningessentials \nOpen to the public free of charge.\nDonations appreciated!

SUMMARY:Dinner and a Blanket: Nourishing Soil with Compost\, Protecting It with Mulch
DESCRIPTION:Making compost is simple\, but choosing the right type can be confusing. Stores offer a wide range: molasses-based\, various manure types (chicken\, rabbit\, cattle\, mixed alfalfa)\, cotton burr\, mushroom\, and even compost with mycorrhiza. Mulches add another layer of choice—single\, double\, or triple shredded; cedar\, cypress\, native varieties; or just use leaves or living mulch. With so many options\, where do you begin? Does it matter\, or are all composts and mulches essentially the same? Join Bill Swantner\, Bexar County Master Gardener\, and he will help make sense of these materials so you can create a more resilient landscape. \nCULTIVATE! classes are free and take place online March 6-7.
